"Followership and Leadership can be thought of as a partnership that simultaneously reaches back and reaches forward in time"

Conclusions
The twentieth century brought changes in
politics, ideology, economics, society, culture, science, technology, and
medicine. Developments in transportation and communications technology reduced
the physical distances and contributed to a rapid exchange of information.
The changes were also reflected in the leaders-followers relationship. In the new century, followership implies a "voluntary choice, not a contractual one" (Kelley, 1992, p 202), which changes the dynamic in the leaders-followers relationship. Followers do not want leaders to decide their work or fate, they want to be treated as partners (Kelley, 1992).
More and more organizations are emphasizing concepts like:
Leaders have to provide an environment in which followers can thrive and become effective. In return followers will take more of the daily responsibilities on their shoulders and get involved in the decision making process of the organization.
